'The Strokes of a Genius'- an Exhibition on the Vedanta Philosophy of Education and Early Childhood Philosophy of Education of Loris Malaguzzi, Italy
Salwan Public School, Mayur Vihar – III, Delhi has organised the extended version of the exhibition 'The Strokes of a Genius' based on the Vedanta Philosophy of Education and Early Childhood Philosophy of Education of Loris Malaguzzi, Italy from 14th April to 21st April, 2012 at Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts. Taking place alongside the main event, on 14th April 2012 was a seminar wherein eminent Vedantists, educationists and pedagogists shared their views on different schools of thought.

The Exhibition was inaugurated by Shri Vineet Joshi, Chairman CBSE, Ms Sushweta Ghosh , Head HT NEXT and other distinguished guest . This was followed by release of the Magazine on Art' Movement in Poetry'. It was a proud and privileged moment to also have the Minister of Education, Pakistan Dr Shamsh Kassim-Lakha. He was grateful for being part of the endeavour and praised the institution on the research work done to understand what True Education is all about. He was keen on collaboration and active exchange programmes which can help break the barriers and get united.

The distinguished guests also appreciated the Pottery and Sculpture Exhibition- Movement in Poetry.... it's about associating the arts with "thinking"…engaging the child's mind and heart to sort out its own reactions and articulate them through the medium at hand. They become so embedded in the task that they learn from inside out rather than from outside in. They created their own precincts wherein the visuals communicate emotions and complexities that are beyond words. The sculpture and pottery work of the students depicted how the school curricula have the potential to develop an imaginative and creative intellect in children.

The Exhibition showcased the educational approach of some of the great Indian Thinkers whose educational philosophies evolved over time and are implemented in schools all over India……Sri Aurobindo's 'Integral Education' system in Mirambika Schools, J. Krishnamurti's Vision of Education, Gijubhai Badheka, the pioneer of Early Childhood Education in India… just to name a few. The emphasis was laid on the language of inner self….the endless the endless quest of mind…the quest of knowledge by which 'we hear the unhearable, by which we perceive the unperceivable, by which we know the unknowable' …reflecting on the way this philosophy elevates the life force through sports…Yoga which disciplines the mind, resulting in spiritual calmness. It's about controlling our mind to find a 'meaning' in our life, in the quest for higher knowledge. The knowledge in us is inherent….it is all inside. 'Education' would thus stand for rousing a 'human being' to the awareness of his true self… a harmonious development of the body, mind and soul.

Salwan Public School is a firm believer in educational innovation to facilitate all-round growth of the children with easy and effective learning. The school established a strong collaboration with the Reggio Emilia Institute Italy, one of the world's finest institutes on Early Childhood Education to learn what 'Early Childhood Education is all about. The Reggio Emilia Approach to early childhood education draws from the ideas of many great thinkers, yet it is much more than an eclectic mix of theories Fundamental to the Reggio approach is, creating a learning environment that helps enhance children's power of thinking and imagination by 'learning from doing'.

The continuous observation and documentation of the vivid expressions of the young minds are finally being displayed in this upgraded exhibition through panels/ slides and models and is an extension of an effort to present the hundred thousand colours and moods of the children once again through their work of art. The uniqueness and originality of this exhibition becomes extraordinary as it recounts through words, objects and images the complex reality of an experience of young minds as they decipher the language of food, indulge in trash gardening, outdoor play, sing and listen to music. It aims to showcase through photographs the moments of teaching and learning along with explanatory scripts and panels, many containing texts of children's words.

The first Speaker to address was Mr. Partho, who has been engaged in the field of spiritual education and practice for twenty years now and has extensive personal research in Advaita Vedanta and Sri Aurobindo's integral Yoga. He shared his views on Vedanta Philosophy of education wherein he laid emphasis on Atma Gyan and self realisation. Shri Shivendra Nagar ji, Educational Consultant, Vedanta World spoke on the practical aspects of Vedanta- how to face the challenges of life wherein he emulated the qualities of a true teacher and an ideal student. He also enlightened on three principles of Vedanta….Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga and Gyan Yoga. The school was fortunate to have Dr Abha Adams, ex-Director The Shri Ram School who voiced her strong concern on 'how to combat and preserve children's childhood.'

Dr. Sheetal Sharma, a distinguished Managing Committee member of DAV Schools laid a strong emphasis on 'Enhancing self-esteem of the children'. She concluded with a story which gave a new insight and new learning experience for one and all.

5th Jan to 28th Feb 2010 and April 2010 .
Of all the sights which can soften and humanize the heart of man, there is none that ought so surely to reach it as that of innocent children, enjoying the happiness which is their proper and natural portion. We are reminded of a poem, so close to my heart of a child’s wish. It goes like this:

Well, we have captured some of these moments in an exhibition, “The Strokes of a Genius ” based on the philosophy of Lorris Malaguzi and inspired by the 1st exhibition we had organized “A 100 Languages of Children”, 2008 at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts, Janpath, New Delhi.

The preview of this fine work of Art, so vividly captured in 142 panels (8’ x 4’) together with the Art and Craft work+ Classroom Architecture would be on display at our school premises from the 5th of January to 28th of February, 2010 and thereafter move to its full glory at the Indira Gandhi National Centre of Arts, Janpath, New Delhi from 2nd of April to 30th April, 2010. It would then travel all over India for the next two years to showcase our work.

These two years of painstaking effort in the words of Mr. Inder Dutt (Architect), is dedicated to our creative team of Early Childhood Facilitators who have toiled day and night to make this dream come true.

Yes, it’s truly a magnificent work of Art, both for its Content developed and scalability of its size, the “Time” and “Energy” taken, the “Research” and “Presentation” executed . . . . and above all the “Will” of my ‘Team’ to channelize their energy into creating a product that lays the foundation of our Early Childhood learning centre intellectuality.

We extend an invitation to your goodself and your faculty members, the young parents and the Managing Committee members to witness a historic moment . . . . and in sharing a dialogue on the journey we have taken. The exhibition would be open to the general public from 6th of April 2010 at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts, Janpath, New Delhi where a two days conference has been planned. Pedagogistas from Italy, Australia, Canada, Sweden and Singapore are expected to come and share their views on the trends of early childhood education.

Yes, we are excited and look forward to sharing our thoughts and moments of joy. Do please ask your Co-ordinator to meet Ms. Sujatha Ganesh (98998-89925) at our school reception to allocate an exclusive time with you for an interactive dialogue with our young ‘minds’ at work.

                                                                                                                                                          Go To Top

The school promoted an innovative, unforeseen and unique exhibition on early childhood education, for the first time in Asia,”A Hundred Languages Of Children”, in close collaboration with the Reggio Emilia Institute (Italy), The Reggio Emilia Institute (Australia), The Reggio Institute (Korea) and IGNCA, from 26th March to 9th April 2008 at the Indira Gandhi National Center for Arts, Mansingh Road, New Delhi.

The program started with a two days long conference wherein many schools participated and this was followed by the exhibition till 9th April 2008. The workshop/ exhibition was Inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Delhi, Ms. Shiela Dixit, in the presence of Mr. Ghare khan admist a number of dignitaries. The Chief Minister congratulated the Salwan Education Trust for the brilliant effort. Over 18000 Teachers, Parents, Administrators, Principals and people from all walks of life visited the exhibition.

This exhibition was extremely innovative right from the beginning. It was presented as a "narrative of the possible", giving visibility to processes and life situations that cannot be linked to standard pedagogical models, pre-constituted education assumptions, theoretical certainties, or generalizable practice. Rather, the experience was based on incessant research and action that take place with a chorus of many voices, many hands, and much intelligence, the center of which was the image of a child who is competent in building knowledge and a constant seeker of meanings.

We are delightful of the "innovative" changes this exhibition will bring during the coming years in the way exhibitions are conceptualized, planned and exhibited including the pedagogical approach in early childhood education.
